Dr. Nancy Soares

Dr. Nancy Soares, founder and owner of Macungie Animal Hospital, takes very seriously the significant roles that pets play in our lives. She traces her own passion for animals and aspiration to be a veterinarian back to the age of eight, when she met Harvey, a black lab owned by family friends.

Nancy Soares graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in veterinary medicine. While still a student, Soares helped found and direct the Pet Visitation Program at the University. Modeled after the human patient program at the University of Pennsylvania hospital, this program allowed for the first time owners to visit their hospitalized pets. The program honors the bond between pets and their owners and the integral role this connection plays in the healing process.

Soares has modeled the care strategy at Macungie Animal Hospital after this program. During her time at the University of Pennsylvania, Nancy Soares received the Student Award for Best Care of Animals and the Leonard Pearson Prize. In addition to her medical degree, Soares earned a simultaneous certificate in business from the prestigious Wharton School of Business.

With a mission to provide pets with quality, affordable medical and surgical care, Nancy Soares has designed and outfitted Macungie Animal Hospital with the most advanced technology to meet the needs of patients and ensure owners that their pets are receiving the best possible care. Macungie Animal Hospital was selected as one of only 10 hospitals in the country to partner with Idexx as a premiere hospital and to house the state-of-the-art Idexx diagnostic and treatment equipment. As underlying cardiac, kidney and other endocrine diseases can often surface if a pet’s mouth is not properly cared for, the hospital also houses the most advanced dental-care equipment available.

The hospital features five exam rooms and a specially designated visitation/grieving room, the Rainbow Room.   Soares established the Rainbow Room so that owners could have the proper environment to visit with and/or say goodbye to their animals. “This room represents all of the patients I’ve learned from, and the pets that have “owned” me, taught me, and continue to teach me about my work every day,” says Soares.

Nancy Soares is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Association (PVMA), and is co-president of the Lehigh Valley Veterinary Medical Association (LVVMA). Soares’ research on the use of chemotherapy treatment on dogs has been published in the Journal of American Veterinary Medical Association. Prior to opening Macungie Animal Hospital, Soares practiced at Cummings Veterinary Hospital in Easton, PA.

A native of New Cumberland, Pennsylvania, Soares now resides in Emmaus, Pennsylvania with her husband Tom, son Nicholas, daughter Olivia, and her furry “owners” Frankie, a Chinese Crested Chihuahua, Daisy, a Terrier Mix, Gunner, a Yellow Lab and JJ, a three-legged black lab and cats: Noonan, Jipsi, and Miriam the three-legged cat.
